Do you know where you are going? Have you thought about the way to get there?
In a collection of environmentalist buttons, I found this remarkable representation of the ultimate in alternative transportation: Walk there.
Walking is the natural transportation, and was the default for most of human history. In the last two generations, however, walking has become something peripheral, for short distances only, or an emergency backup when we have n other way of getting to our destination.
To walk has become a radical act of rebellion against the technological orthodoxy of civilization. There’s no such thing as an authentically edgy car any more. To drive a car is to sit, and to follow the roads that others have set down for you.
To walk is to set off on a long-forgotten way. It is a method of re-exploring the Earth and ourselves, a four mile per hour revolution.
Get radical. Walk.
