Years ago, they told us that Total Information Awareness was shut down. The original project, promoted by Iran Contra alumnus Admiral John Poindexter, aimed to integrate information from government spy operations against American citizens with commercial databases to enable the government to track the personal activities of American citizens, whether they were suspected of a crime or not - and to do it without a search warrant. America breathed a sigh of relief.

It was an unmerited relief.

Now, we know that the government has been conducting massive electronic surveillance against American citizens, grabbing information about our telephone calls, mail and email, and internet habits, as well as our commercial activity and travel patterns, and putting all that information into a giant government database that allows the federal government to track our private activities.Total Information Awareness is alive and well.
